The Anonymous Project

Your Donations Are Worth Far More Than You Might Think

When making a donation, people often have a preconceived idea in their mind of how much they think their donation can do. You may feel that a donation of £5 can do very little by itself. But what if that money actually goes a lot further than you realise?

In our home countries, we are familiar with the cost of locally available products and services and that is how we gauge the value of our currency. But in a foreign country, your £5 may be able to buy a significant quantity of currency where the cost of products and services is cheaper.

In this article, we will look at the value and power of your currency in other countries, including those where The Anonymous Project delivers aid.

The Variable Value of Money and Products

When we think of our expenses for things such as electricity and food, we know how much we expect to pay for these things in our own currency. We also know that when we visit another country, the cost of these same things will be different. If you live in the UK, going abroad often means that many things will be cheaper. Here are some of the reasons for this difference.

Currency Exchange Rates

The British Pound is one of the strongest currencies worldwide. Its value far exceeds that of currencies such as the Ugandan shilling, Israeli new shekel and Spanish peseta. This is sometimes the reason people choose to retire overseas, not just for the (usually) warmer weather but so that they can afford more, for longer, in a place where their retirement money has greater value.

The strength of a currency can be affected by factors such as interest rates, inflation, exchange rates and public debt.

Labour Costs

Wages are generally lower in many developing countries, meaning that services requiring human labour are cheaper. In some cases, this includes even highly skilled labour, such as healthcare and education.

Medical tourism offers an example of how services can be much more affordable overseas. Private medical treatment can be incredibly expensive in the UK, but easily affordable in other countries such as Thailand, Türkiye and Singapore. This has led to people seeking low-cost medical treatment abroad instead of waiting for treatment in the UK.

Unfortunately, in some places, wages are not only very low, but people live in such poverty that even though services such as healthcare are cheap, they still cannot afford them. The inability to access such basic healthcare services puts these people at risk of death from illnesses that are easily treatable and entirely preventable.

Local Production

If a resource is produced locally from abundant resources, it is often cheaper. For example, in Uganda, the weather, low labour costs, and an abundance of raw materials required to produce vanilla make it cheap to purchase there. After export costs and the markup by distributors and retailers, vanilla pods become much more expensive in countries such as the UK.

Farmers in less economically developed countries are sometimes not able to sell their produce for very much. Fairtrade is a global movement that has recognised this disabling disparity and helps farmers in these countries by setting a minimum price for their produce, helping to fight poverty.

Political and Economic Stability

Countries experiencing conflict or instability often see fluctuations in the cost of goods and services. Goods that are scarce but in high demand may become more expensive.

In Gaza, the ongoing conflict has led to the destruction of infrastructure. This, combined with supply blockades, has resulted in severe shortages. The majority of the population faces food insecurity and malnutrition is widespread. Because food is now hard to come by despite being essential for survival, it has become so expensive that it is nearly unaffordable. The prices of many foods have more than doubled, causing a sharp increase in the cost of living.

Low Cost, High Impact

When The Anonymous Project visits other countries to provide aid, we are able to implement simple, low-cost solutions that have a huge impact on the communities that we reach.

  • With just £1100, we can build a water well that will continuously provide a community with a source of fresh water.
  • With £500, we can fund a village farm project that provides people with the seeds and tools that they need to sustainably produce their own food.
  • £50 can provide an entire family with staple foods for a month.

The same amount of money in the UK would not be able to stretch this far, but we are bringing the British pound to countries where we can change the lives of an entire community for years to come with what would sustain a single person in the UK for less than a month.

The Power of Small Donations

There are plenty of local charities that fund local causes, and small donations are by no means any less important to them. This article aims to highlight the underestimation of the value of donations to charities that bring their aid to less developed countries and emphasise the magnitude of good that they can do.

Even small donations can add up and contribute significantly to large-scale projects. Small donations from multiple people over time can accumulate into impressive amounts.

Many of the projects The Anonymous Project is working on aim to help meet people’s immediate needs, such as food and aid. For causes such as this, where people are actively suffering and in need of help, an injection of funds can be rapidly utilised to bring aid. Longer-term projects provide great value to communities and individuals by supporting the education of children and food sustainability.

Conclusion

When making a donation, you may be surprised to learn how far charitable organisations can make your money go. Those who live in wealthier countries have the power to produce transformative changes in other countries with just a small percentage of their income. Many charitable organisations not only utilise the leverage of a strong currency in less developed countries, but they also partner with local organisations to get even greater value from donations.

When you donate to a charity that understands the value of your currency abroad and knows how to maximize its impact, your contribution can achieve far more than it could in your own country.
